Astigmatism. Astigmatism is usually caused by an irregularity in the shape of the eyeball (it is shaped like a rugby ball rather than a football). Astigmatism shows itself in more subtle ways. You may find that if you were to look at the spokes of a wheel or numbers on a clock, some might be clearer than others. A special toric lens corrects the problem.
